The Challenge
The Y Australia required a CEO who could lead within a highly complex federated structure, balancing national direction with the autonomy of independent Member Associations.
The leadership challenge was multi-layered. The organisation needed to continue resetting its strategy and relevance following COVID-19, strengthen alignment across Member Associations and maintain momentum behind YMCA Vision 2030.
The successful candidate also needed to manage broad stakeholder relationships across Boards, CEOs, government, community partners and global YMCA networks.
In addition, the CEO role required strong safeguarding leadership, with responsibility for upholding high standards of governance and accountability for children and young people.
The Board was seeking a leader who could balance commercial sustainability with social impact, while bringing the credibility and values alignment required to lead a purpose-led national organisation.
Our Solution
Galvin-Rowley Executive delivered a bespoke, high-touch CEO search process, working closely with the Board and Search Sub-Committee throughout the engagement.
The process began with deep client immersion to understand The Y Australia’s federated governance model, stakeholder environment, cultural sensitivities and strategic priorities. This discovery stage helped define the leadership capabilities required for the next CEO.
Galvin-Rowley Executive then conducted national and adjacent-sector market mapping across not-for-profit federated organisations, sport, recreation, community services, government and quasi-government leadership. The search focused on executives with experience leading complex, multi-entity systems, proven transformation capability and strong advocacy skills.
A rigorous assessment process was used to evaluate candidates against the requirements of the role. This included structured behavioural and competency-based interviews, assessment of federated leadership capability, strategic influence, governance experience and cultural alignment.
Galvin-Rowley Executive also represented The Y Australia carefully in the market, ensuring candidates understood the complexity, purpose and opportunity of the role. Transparency, confidentiality and candidate care were maintained throughout the process.
