Case Study: Appointing a CEO to Lead a Critical Food Supply Chain Asset

The Challenge

Melbourne Market Authority required a CEO capable of leading a high-value statutory authority with an asset base exceeding $579 million. The role required leadership across strategy, operations, governance, stakeholder engagement, culture and long-term commercial performance.

The successful candidate needed to navigate a highly regulated, multi-stakeholder environment while strengthening government and industry relationships. They also needed to drive strategic growth, innovation and operational excellence in a setting that directly supports Victorian growers, wholesalers, retailers and the broader food supply chain.

The leadership profile required a rare combination of commercial acumen, public sector governance capability, operational leadership and stakeholder credibility.

Our Solution

Galvin-Rowley Executive delivered a bespoke CEO search process in close partnership with the Melbourne Market Authority Board and Sub-Committee.

The process began with deep discovery and role definition. Galvin-Rowley Executive worked with the Board to clarify success measures across strategy, asset leadership, financial performance, governance, stakeholder engagement and culture. This ensured clarity before market engagement and helped translate a complex brief into a compelling market proposition.

A targeted search strategy was then developed, drawing on deep networks across agribusiness, infrastructure and complex operational environments. Galvin-Rowley Executive also applied cross-sector mapping to identify transferable leadership capability, with international reach through Agilium Worldwide where relevant.

The search focused on executives with large-scale operational leadership experience, exposure to government and regulatory environments, and a proven ability to manage complexity while driving performance and change.

Candidates were assessed through a structured, merit-based process that included longlist identification, candidate benchmarking, behavioural and capability interviews, and alignment against Melbourne Market Authority’s key result areas.

The Appointment

Galvin-Rowley Executive successfully supported the appointment of Rob Clayton as Chief Executive Officer.

Rob brought a highly relevant and differentiated leadership profile. His experience included serving as Managing Director of Nutrien Ag Solutions Australia, leading Australia’s largest agribusiness, and more recently as SVP Retail North America, overseeing significant sales and earnings performance.

His background included large-scale P&L leadership, operational excellence, stakeholder engagement, M&A and transformation, digital transformation and system integration at scale. His deep relationships across the agricultural sector and supply chain were strongly aligned to Melbourne Market Authority’s operating environment.

Rob’s leadership style also aligned with the Board’s requirements: disciplined, commercially astute, collaborative, stakeholder-oriented and focused on performance, safety and continuous improvement.

The Impact

The appointment positioned Melbourne Market Authority to strengthen its role as a strategic anchor in Victoria’s food supply chain.

Rob’s appointment supported the organisation’s ability to optimise its significant property and asset portfolio, enhance operational efficiency, build stronger government and industry partnerships, and drive long-term sustainable growth.

The engagement also provided Melbourne Market Authority with a robust and defensible selection process, access to a broad executive talent pool and a professional experience for both client and candidates.

The Melbourne Market Authority CEO search demonstrates Galvin-Rowley Executive’s capability to deliver complex, high-stakes CEO appointments in highly regulated and stakeholder-intensive environments.

By combining deep market insight, rigorous methodology and a highly personalised approach, Galvin-Rowley Executive supported Melbourne Market Authority in appointing a leader capable of driving meaningful impact for the organisation and the broader Victorian economy.

What Our Clients Say

Jennifer’s management of the candidate side of searches is exemplary. Too often, candidates are left wondering where we are in the process, what’s next, and, without good advice, going into interviews. Jennifer and her team are the opposite of this. I felt informed about the process and given background on the hiring company and its executives, enabling me to move confidently into interviews. Jennifers always delivered on the promised timing of updates. Her attention to detail on the client side of the recruitment is precise and focused. It has been a pleasure to work with Jennifer, and I can highly recommend her services.

Board Chair, Dandenong Market

I first met Jennifer as a candidate. Having touched most of the major search firms as a candidate for executive roles and experienced first-hand their generally low level of candidate care, I have had no hesitation in recommending Jennifer to colleagues who are searching for a new job, or in using her myself as a preferred provider when in need of HR staff.

Jen has really invested in understanding our culture and what attributes to look for to ensure a seamless team-fit. In addition, her definition of quality and high-calibre is the same as ours.
That makes life so much easier, and means we are consistently forced to make tough choices at the end of a relatively short recruitment period.
What else could we ask? Highly professional, and a calmly positive influence on us all.

The Director, Jennifer Galvin-Rowley, takes the time to understand her clients’ needs and then searches through her amazing network of contacts to find the right people for the right jobs.
Whilst I was CEO of BeyondBlue, Jennifer and her team were a delight to work with and I wouldn’t go anywhere else if I was looking for a key executive.

For nine months we’d searched in vain for a HSE Manager. This was a difficult project: candidates were scarce, our standards were high, and the role was in the country.
When Jen was referred to us, she stood above the other recruiters for three reasons: she dealt in specialist OH&S Managers; she knew how to fill rural roles; and she didn’t advertise—she searched.
Jen approached the task with imagination. Her ideas were unusual, yet so logical. She handled candidates with promptness and respect, and we swiftly found and hired a great fit. I therefore suggest you let Jen recruit your next manager.
